The new British standard will require number plates to be marked with:
Motorists whose vehicles bear number plates, which have been customised by means of stylised letters and figures such as italics or the placement of number plate fixing bolts must replace them or risk prosecution.
The law states that, you must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers. Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC). Offences may result in any or all of the following:
A fine of up to £1,000
The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN
The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test
Fonts must be in the prescribed Charles Wright font which measures 79mm high x 50mm wide.

Regional or country indicators with accompanying flags are 'OPTIONAL' and must be situated on the extreme left of the plate.
The representative terms are 'GB', 'GREAT BRITAIN', 'ENG', 'SCO', 'CYMRU' and their associated flags are the only emblems permitted on UK number plates.
The UK is now officially allowing motorists to display the GB (also known as the Euroflag) if they wish to - it is not compulsory. Colour, size, position and design are all specified within Council Regulations (EC) No: 2411/98 of the 3rd November 1998. The new Statutory Instrument expressly forbids any other symbol on the number plate.
